Jack’s Journey—and the Mission It Inspired
How Jack’s experience inspired a family-led mission for more inclusion, adventure, and childhood moments.
Beyond the Pavement began with Jack and with a family determined not to let inaccessible places decide which parts of childhood he could enjoy.
Jack lives with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, but DMD is only one part of who he is. He is a son, a brother, an adventurer, and a kid who deserves opportunities to explore, participate, laugh, travel, and make memories.
As everyday outings required more planning, our family began seeing the world differently. A doorway, trail, event, or family destination could either welcome Jack in or leave him on the sidelines.
A Family Experience Becomes a Mission
Those experiences showed us that inclusion is created through accessibility, thoughtful planning, willing partners, and communities that believe every child belongs.
Beyond the Pavement grew from that lesson. The mission is to help more children with Duchenne join family adventures, recreation, travel, celebrations, school activities, and community life.
Why “Beyond the Pavement”?
Some of the best parts of childhood happen beyond the easy path: at the beach, on a trail, during a family vacation, at a sporting event, around a campfire, or while exploring somewhere new.
Going beyond the pavement represents more than terrain. It means moving beyond the barriers that can make a child feel excluded from the people and experiences they love.
Jack Paves the Way
Jack is the reason this mission began, but Beyond the Pavement is meant to reach far beyond one child.
Every child has experiences they want to join. Every family deserves more opportunities to make memories together. Jack started the journey, and together we can help pave the way for others.
